Our Story

Welcome to the Cigar Association of America

CAA has a rich heritage of supporting its members for over 130 years by leading the way forward for the cigar industry. Cigars are more than a great American tradition — the cigar industry is a powerful contributor to the American economy, responsible for billions of dollars in annual revenue, and hundreds of thousands of quality jobs.

Located in Washington, D.C. and incorporated in the state of New York, CAA is exempted under section 501(c)(6) of the IRS code and conducts business as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.

Tracing the Legacy of the Cigar Association of America

1890

Formation of the Cigar Manufacturers Association of New York

The original mission focused on three main areas:

  • Unite the Cigar Manufacturers of the City of New York for their mutual benefit and protection
  • Encourage the economic progress of the Cigar Industry
  • Fulfill other lawful purposes for the betterment of the New York Cigar Industry

Afterward, two other separate like-minded associations were also formed: the Cigar Institute of America, Inc., and the Cigar Research Council, Inc.

1937

Establishment of the Cigar Manufacturers Association of America, Inc. in New York City

The strategic goals of the newly formed association included:

  • Establish standards for cigar manufacturing.
  • Promote the common welfare of the cigar industry.
  • Procure uniformity within the industry
  • Research, monitor, and act upon legislation that may impact the industry.
  • Provide industry statistical reports for the members.

1972

Merging of Various Cigar Associations

To establish better cooperation among the associations, key meetings and discussions eventually led to the amalgamation of various cigar associations into one association. The Cigar Institute of America, Inc. and the Cigar Research Council, Inc. merged to become the Cigar Manufacturers Association of America, Inc.

1974

Renamed the Cigar Association of America, Inc.

In 1974, the name was changed from the Cigar Manufacturers Association of America, Inc. to the Cigar Association of America, Inc. (CAA).

1976

Relocated from New York City to Washington, D.C.

During this time, the board of directors and members agreed that the area of government relations is an essential activity for CAA. As a result, it was decided that the offices of the association should relocate to Washington, D.C.

PRESENT DAY

CAA has continued its rich heritage as an industry leader by having a vital presence in the nation’s capital and across the nation at local and state levels of government.
